Parents, families and the Church have roles in the ritual of Baptism. Before your child is baptized, we like to meet with parents so that our celebration of the Baptism ritual is graceful and that parents fully understand the commitment they are making to raise their child in the Catholic faith. Baptism preparation meetings for first-time parents are scheduled throughout the year. We invite both parents to participate and children are most welcome to attend. Godparents are also welcome to attend. Baptisms are usually celebrated on Saturdays following the 4:30 p.m. Mass and Sundays following the Noon Mass. To schedule a baptism for infants and older children (7-14 years), please contact Mary Pat Storms, 816-251-1113, email [email protected] or register online at olpls.org/baptism.
Candidates participate in conversations and Sacraments with their sponsors, attend small group sessions, serve our parish and local community, attend a retreat, and participate in parish ministry. Adult team members help lead during the process to pass on the faith they themselves learned during their Confirmation Process. For more information or to help as a mentor of the Confirmation Team, contact the Youth & Young Adult Ministry Office, 816-251-1107, or email Michael Nations at [email protected].
Adults college age or older who would like to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation may contact Mary Pat Storms, email: [email protected] or 816-251-1113. Confirmations are usually celebrated in the spring.
Adults or teens who would like to celebrate First Eucharist and/or First Reconciliation may email Mary Pat Storms, [email protected] or 816-251-1113. First Communions/First Reconciliations are scheduled throughout the year.
In the fall, parish children prepare to experience the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The typical age for reception of this sacrament is about seven years or second grade. Parents prepare their children for sacraments with the support of the classroom teachers in OLP School or the Children’s Faith Formation program. Children take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to First Eucharist.
In January, parish children continue their sacramental journey by preparing for celebration of the Sacrament of First Eucharist. The Sacrament of First Eucharist is celebrated during special liturgies between Easter and Pentecost. For more information, please contact Karena Coatney in the Children’s Faith Formation Office, 816-251-1135.
Marriage preparation meetings are an essential part of the process as a couple prepares to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage. Please contact the Parish Office, 816-251-1100, at least nine months prior to your desired wedding date to initiate the preparation.
The journey to becoming Catholic includes preparing individuals for the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. The journey includes several phases. Inquirers are those who are discerning whether they would like to make the Catholic faith their own. Meetings revolve around questions inquirers may have about the Catholic faith. Candidates (those baptized in another Christian tradition) and Catechumens (unbaptized people) make a formal commitment at the Rite of Welcome and Acceptance. Sponsors accompany the Candidates and Catechumens on their journey to joining the Church at the Easter Vigil. Adults who have been baptized in another Christian denomination may join the Church throughout the year, following an individualized period of preparation. Adults inquiring about the Catholic faith, those wanting to learn more about being Catholic, interested in becoming Catholic, or serving as a sponsor may contact Mary Pat Storms, [email protected].
Adults who have been baptized in the Catholic faith and wish to prepare for First Communion or the Sacrament of Confirmation can contact Mary Pat Storms for more information, 816-251-1113 or email [email protected].
